"How Do You Know If You Hear God’s Voice?"

By: Christi Given 2025

Today, we live in a world filled with so many opinions, voices, options and distractions, that God’s voice can easily be drowned out. How can we hear God’s voice if we’re always on our phones and filling up our schedules and we never sit and make time to read God’s Word? And when we do, in fact, make time for God, how do we know if He is really speaking to us?

THE DIFFERENT WAYS GOD SPEAKS

There are different ways in which the Lord God Almighty speaks to the body of Christ. First, it’s through His Holy Word, the Bible. God can speak to us through people and through the power of the Holy Spirit. The Lord Jesus Christ can also use dreams and visions that align with His Word and nature.

God can speak through people like a Pastor or another believer, but remember, He will never contradict His Word. Always ask yourself, “Does this line up with God’s truth?” If it doesn’t, then it probably is not of God and is a counterfeit or is false. Another comment is that possibly the vision, dream or message has simply not come to pass, which means you must wait and be patient and prayerful.

“…When he putteth forth his own sheep, he goeth before them, and the sheep follow him: for they know his voice. And a stranger will they not follow, but will flee from him: for they know not the voice of strangers.”

—John 10:4-5

The Bible says that Jesus is our shepherd and we are like sheep (John 10:3). The Word of God says that the Lord’s voice will be distinct from a stranger’s, and that the more we read the Word, the more we will be familiar and clear about God’s direction for our lives. The voice of a stranger or false teacher we shall run from. That is what God’s Word teaches. Amen. Ask God to speak to you and I’m certain He will! Ask God for clarity, for wisdom or for a confirmation. His Word promises that anyone who lacks wisdom He will give it generously. (James 1:5)

“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.”

-John 10:27-28

If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” — James 1:5
